Music

Broomfield is delighted to offer lots of opportunities in music throughout the school. All the children have singing lessons with our specialist music teacher, Mrs Cordelia Bou. Our older children sing in our annual opera collaboration with the professional Garden Opera company, last year in 2010 at St Anne’s Church, Kew Green. We also run our Chamber Choir by audition for children in years 4-6 who have mastered singing in parts and wish to extend their singing. Our school band is run by our Head Teacher, Mr York with Mrs Bou. All children are welcome to play once they are in Year 2 normally. We play lots of fun music specially arranged by Mr York for major school occasions such as our Carol Concert, School fair and Spring Instrumental Concert. Children can learn many musical instruments at school with our excellent team of peripatetic staff. The instruments available are: piano, recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, guitar (acoustic and electric), drum kit and drum club (djembe drumming in a group). Anyone wanting to play an instrument just needs to contact the school office for us to arrange a try out session with one of our music teachers.
Drama
We stage 11 productions a year at Broomfield involving all the children. Our Early Years and Key Stage 1 classes perform Christmas and Summer plays, our Years 3 and 4 stage Spring shows, and our Years 5 & 6 children lead our major Summer production, sometimes supported by all or some of year 4.
In addition drama lessons develop the children’s performing skills as well as enabling us to support our pupils’ emotional understanding and development.
Many children opt to take our additional speech and drama lessons. These introduce children to public speaking, poetry learnt by heart and reading well aloud and are assessed annually with examinations from the English Speaking Board.
Art
Art is everywhere you look at Broomfield. The walls are decorated with an array of paintings and other artworks done by the children as part of their normal lessons. In the Early Years and Key Stage 1 classes art is generally taught by our team of class teachers. In Key Stage 2 our art lessons are led by our artist in residence, Mrs Claudia Frey. She develops the children’s work in 2D and 3D work in our specialist art room and around the school.
As part of the curriculum Mrs Frey does 3D art projects for all classes each year, especially clay work using our kiln, kindly donated by our PTA. Our 2010 Ofsted report particularly praised our art work, and our children regularly win art prizes in the Richmond May Fair – congratulations to the 12 winners in the 2011 competition.
After school there are 3 after school optional art clubs also run by Mrs Frey as well as one lunchtime art club . These enable children throughout the school to develop their visual creativity even further.
